Mae Sot migrant workers holding temporally passports are going to Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, to find jobs. “Factory and general workers who work in Mae Sot get approximately one hundred baht per day, which includes overtime work. A good monthly income for a person is over three thousand baht. This becomes two thousand baht after expenses; water bill, fire bill and food cost are cut by the employer. In order to save one hundred thousand kyat, workers need to save and work for two months because of unstable currency exchange rate” said Pwin Phru Kyaw who works in an electric cord factory.
“Those who have been working in Mae Sot
have been satisfied with as what employers pay, but the employers don’t
even provide a specific pay day each month. Therefore, all workers need
to ask for their rights together. Also, the foreman are Myanmarese in
almost every factories. It will not correct unfavorable conditions for
workers if worker leaders don't stand for the side of workers. Don’t
betray our nation,” she added.
There are still exploitations by
employers who force inhumane conditions on migrant workers throughout
Thailand. Among them are accounts of rape, and widespread mental and
physical abuse by both Thai employers and polices. Conditions on
domestic workers is the worst. Almost every day there is human
trafficking on Thailand-Myanmar border, even though mutual government
and nongovernmental organizations work against the practice.
