Home ministry investigates torture of two Arakanese youths

Mun Sart Khine
Rangoon: The home ministry has sent a team to investigate the case of two Arakanese youths who were tortured after being arrested on the 10th of November in Tamwe Police Station in Rangoon Division.

Ko Aung Naing, one of the victims, said the team summoned and investigated two of them on the 14th of November following the online news report about their case in both Burmese and English languages by Narinjara.
“The home ministry has sent a team to look into our case of torture. The team has investigated both of us, the tea-shop owner, and the police of the Tamwe Station including officer U Kyaw Zaw Win, who tortured us. The investigators told us to tell the truth and not to worry about anyone or anything and that they would take action. They also told us that they were assigned by their seniors after finding an online news report about us. They have taken detailed information about us, our incident and our medical reports as well”, said Ko Aung Naing.
The investigation team that is assigned by the home ministry to look into to the torture of youths is said to be comprised of Police Major U Ba Tun, Sub-inspector U Soe Naung and Sub-inspector U Than Tun.
Ko Aung Naing said they were apologized to by Tamwe Township Police In-Charge, U Kyaw Kyaw Aung, Station in-charge, U Aung Kyaw, and Sub-inspector U Kyaw Zaw Win after calling them to the police station before investigation began.
“We have accepted their apologies on humanitarian grounds. But we told them they should publicly make such apologies and they accepted our proposal as well. Two members of the Committee for Assisting Former Political Prisoners have also accompanied us to the police station. They made their apologies before them and we have also made some photographic records”, he said.
When asked his opinion, Ko Aung Naing added, “I believe the rule of law is essential in this period of transition in Burma, and taking action against such lawlessness is a good developing sign as well. I really appreciate the action being taken.”
